What is an Oscillator?

Born Too Soon launched a campaign to help our Neonatal Unit raise funds for an oscillator in November 1998. This is a special type of ventilator that uses very high frequencies to help sick babies with their breathing.  When using conventional ventilators, the number of breaths delivered per minute to the babies is generally similar to their normal rate of breathing. This usually ranges from 60 to 80 breaths per minute, which in itself is faster than breathing rates in older children and adults.

However, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation uses breath rates in the order of 600 breath cycles per minute.  At the same time, the pressure with which these very frequent breath rates is delivered is less than that of the conventional ventilators. The advantage that this has is in perhaps reducing the possible long-term damage to lung tissue. This is thought to be due in part to the high pressures needed to inflate these lungs.

The advancement in technology that has made such modes of ventilation possible is very interesting.  Some of these oscillators’ use could be likened to a loudspeaker diaphragm to deliver these high frequencies. It does not quite p lay a tune, but the babies do move in harmony with it.

There are many different ways to support sick babies with their breathing. The oscillator will add to this flexibility in their management.

We are pleased to announce the money was raised by March 1999 and we have taken delivery of the oscillator and the staff are currently being trained in its use. Thank you must go to all the people involved in raising the £25,000 needed for the purchase of the Oscillator.
